Sachidananda Dash

Sachidananda Dash (born 1972), also known as Gayaka Bisarada Sachidananda Dash, is an Indian folk singer and litterateur from Odisha, known for his expertise in Pala, a traditional 16th-century ballad art form. With a career spanning over three decades, he is recognized as a leading performer of Badi Pala (competitive balladry) and for his role in preserving Odia oral and devotional traditions.

Early life and education

Dash was born in Sudusailo, Cuttack, Odisha, into a culturally rooted family. He is the son of the Late Brahmananda Dash, a noted Pala Gayak, and was exposed to music, storytelling, and devotional practices from an early age. He completed his education up to Plus Two and later pursued Vedic studies at Maharshi Beda Bigyan School in Delhi. He received training in Sanskrit literature, Odia poetics, and classical music, which form the foundation of Pala performance.

Career

Dash formally began his professional career in 1995 after undergoing training under Guru Madan Mohan Jena. He was influenced by prominent Pala artists such as Prahalad Sahoo and Laxmidhar Rout. Over the years, he has performed extensively across Odisha as well as in Jharkhand and West Bengal.

He leads a traditional Pala troupe consisting of a Bayaka (mridanga player) and Palias (chorus performers). His performance style includes Ladhei Pala, a form of poetic and philosophical debate between lead singers. His repertoire covers themes from Panchasakha literature, the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, and the traditions of Lord Jagannath.

Recognition and legacy

Dash is a member of Nilachal Nikhila Pala Gayaka Parisada and is regarded as a senior artist in the Pala tradition. He has been featured on regional platforms such as Prarthana TV and DD Odia, and his performances are also available on digital channels like Darshan Creatives and UKS TV.

He has participated in major cultural and religious events, including festivals such as Maha Shivaratri and Ratha Yatra. In addition to performing, he has trained around 20–30 students, contributing to the continuation of the art form.

Dash is considered a cultural ambassador of Odisha, known for combining traditional knowledge with performance, and for sustaining the legacy of Pala for future generations.
