Gitanjali Samantaray, formally honored as Gayika Maudamani Gitanjali Samantaray, is an Indian folk singer from Odisha, highly celebrated for her expertise in Pala and Nadia Kirtan. She is recognized as a champion performer of Ladhei Pala (competitive balladry) and a key preserver of Odia devotional traditions.

 

Early life and education

Born in Nirakarpur, Puri district, Samantaray was raised in the cultural heartland of Odisha. She received rigorous training in literature, spirituality, culture, and music. Her education enables her to seamlessly blend Puranic stories with complex Odia musical arrangements.

 

Career

Samantaray leads a well-known traditional Pala troupe, frequently accompanied by Bayak Sudarshan Sahoo and Sri Palia Prakash Nayak. She is a formidable competitor in Badi Pala and is a noted winner of prominent cultural competitions, such as the Arei Mukta Pala Mancha in 2024. Her performances cover deep philosophical topics, societal issues, and devotional stories.
